Danish wind farm company Ørsted has recently taken a noteworthy initiative by constructing three large artificial bird nests off the coast of the United Kingdom in collaboration with contractor Red7Marine.
This inventive move aims to provide essential support to the populations of kittiwake, a type of seabird that might face challenges due to the proximity of Ørsted’s nearby wind farm.
The strategic location chosen for Ørsted’s nests is about 0.6 miles (one kilometer) from the shore of Suffolk, located on the eastern coast of Great Britain.
What are the artificial bird nests?
These nests, designed in an octagonal shape, have been crafted to accommodate roughly 500 individual nests each. These structures are elevated above sea level on sturdy poles, as reported by Electrek.
Inside the nests, a thoughtful setup has been established, featuring practical amenities such as whiteboards, chairs, and tables. These provisions are intended to aid researchers in effectively documenting their observations and studies related to the bird population.
To allow for discreet observation without disturbing the birds, the nests are equipped with sliding Perspex panels, enabling researchers to observe the nests without being noticed by the feathered inhabitants, according to details shared by Electrek.
Importance of artificial bird nests?
Ørsted’s ambitious Hornsea 3 project, projected to reach completion by 2025, possesses the remarkable capacity to provide renewable energy to more than three million households, according to Electrek’s reports.

This concern stems from data indicating that man-made structures, including wind turbines, contribute to the loss of a substantial number of birds. A study conducted in 2013 revealed that between 140,000 and 328,000 birds fall victim to wind turbine collisions annually in the United States.
In a broader context, human-made structures might be responsible for as many as one billion bird fatalities each year, as noted by the United States Forest Service. While the magnitude of these losses underscores the seriousness of the issue, it also emphasizes the significance of taking measures to address it.

Antoniou further explained that, in the interim, the provided structures offer a safe nesting space, enabling future generations of kittiwakes to raise their young in a secure environment, away from predators and urban disturbances.
